The Kallima Way: Safety and Side Effects of Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting (not eating) and eating. Weight loss is the most common reason for people to try intermittent fasting and in our previous post, we shared the incredible health benefits associated with fasting.

Our main concern for all our patients that visit us, is their safety and wellbeing. We ensure we equip them with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. Although we would love for everyone to enjoy the journey as we do, we know all too well that intermittent fasting is certainly not for everyone.

You should not fast under these circumstances as it could be harmful:

  • If you’re underweight or have a history of eating disorders.

  • If you have issues with fertility and/or are trying to conceive, consider holding off on intermittent fasting for now.

  • If you are pregnant and breastfeeding

Further, you should not fast without consulting your health professional first if you have a medical condition such as:

- Diabetes

- Low Blood Pressure

- If you are taking prescribed medication

All that being said, there is nothing dangerous about not eating for a while if you’re healthy and well-nourished overall.

Side Effects of Intermittent Fasting

It’s no surprise, hunger is the main side effect of IF.

Some people may feel weak in the beginning phases of implementing IF, this is normal as it takes some time for your body to adapt to your new meal schedule. Many people also worry about feeling dizzy. Low salt intake can be the cause of this and can be alleviated through more salt intake in food and/or broths. Remember to stay hydrated too! If the feeling of weakness/dizziness persists, we would recommend seeing your health care professional as soon as possible.

Constipation has been recorded as a side effect of IF which can be combated by increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables and fiber. If the problem persists, take a natural laxative.

As with anything in life, the journey varies tremendously from person to person. At Kallima our passion is to help you live a healthier life.  Schedule your consultation at Kallima to learn more about how we can help you transform your life in a manner that is good for your body and mind!
